Since memorization is the lowest level of learning, kick it up a notch by adding higher level learning and vocabulary development using whatever you are reading. That's right: history, science, literature, whatever.

Let students find the sentence the word is used in the text. Then, find three synonyms and three antonyms. After that, take it to the highest level of learning by having students create their own sentence using the word or one of the synonyms and antonyms.
