    <p>Your student knows the steps. They can name every letter in RACE. They sit down to write — and still hand you one sentence.</p>
    <p>Or they write four sentences that say the same thing four different ways.</p>
    <p>Or they find a quote from the text, drop it in, and explain it with: <em>"This shows my answer because it shows my answer."</em></p>
    <p>And you're left wondering what went wrong — because they followed the formula.</p>

      <p>Here's what went wrong: the formula didn't teach them how to think. It taught them where to put things. That's not a student problem. That's a framework problem.</p>

    <h2>Why RACE Works — Until It Doesn't</h2>

    <p>I want to be clear about something before I tell you what I use instead: RACE is not a bad strategy. For a student who already knows how to construct a paragraph, who already has some experience reasoning through a text-based question, RACE is a solid checklist. It keeps them organized.</p>
    <p>But for struggling writers? For reluctant readers? For students who need structure that tells them exactly what to think about at each step — not just where to put their answer?</p>
    <p>RACE runs out of road fast.</p>

    <p>Here's what RACE actually asks students to do:</p>

    <ul>
      <li><strong>R — Restate the question</strong></li>
      <li><strong>A — Answer the question</strong></li>
      <li><strong>C — Cite evidence from the text</strong></li>
      <li><strong>E — Explain your evidence</strong></li>
    </ul>

    <p>Four steps. Clean. Simple. The problem shows up at E.</p>
    <p>"Explain" is doing all the heavy lifting of actual analytical writing, and RACE gives students zero guidance about what explaining actually means. It doesn't tell them how to connect their evidence to their answer. It doesn't tell them what depth looks like. It doesn't tell them what to do when the evidence they found doesn't quite say what they need it to say.</p>
    <p>So they explain by restating what they already said. And they turn it in. And technically — they completed every step.</p>

    <h2>What CCSS Actually Asks for in Grades 6–8</h2>

    <p>This is where it gets important, because this isn't just a teaching philosophy. It's a standards issue.</p>

      <p><strong>W.6.1b</strong> asks students to support their claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.</p>
      <p><strong>W.7.1b</strong> raises that bar — students must support their claims with logical reasoning and relevant evidence.</p>
      <p><strong>W.8.1b</strong> expects students to use evidence that accurately and sufficiently supports the claim.</p>
      <p><strong>W.6–8.9</strong> requires students to draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis.</p>
      <p class="callout-text">Not support an answer. Not restate a question. Support analysis.<br><br>RACE produces answers. It doesn't build analysts.</p>

    <h2>What I Built Instead — and Why</h2>

    <p>In 2018, I brought a different framework to my ELA team lead. She told me it wasn't good. She didn't use it with her students.</p>
    <p>I kept using it with mine anyway — because I could see what it was doing for my most struggling writers. Kids who had never written more than three sentences on a short answer question were writing full, developed responses. Not because I lowered the bar. Because I changed the scaffold.</p>
    <p>That framework is TREES™.</p>

    <p>That last letter — S, the <em>So what?</em> — is the one that changes everything.</p>

    <h2>The Difference TREES™ Makes — Line by Line</h2>

    <p>Let me show you what this looks like in practice. The question: <em>In Chapter 5 of The Hobbit, what does Bilbo's decision to spare Gollum reveal about his character?</em></p>

      <p>Bilbo's decision to spare Gollum reveals that he is a merciful character. He decides not to kill Gollum even though he could. Tolkien writes, "It was mercy that stayed his hand." This shows that Bilbo is merciful because he was merciful to Gollum.</p>

    <p>They followed RACE. They restated, answered, cited, and explained. But the explanation is circular — it doesn't develop the idea at all.</p>

      <p>Bilbo's choice to spare Gollum reveals that he has the kind of moral courage that goes beyond physical bravery. Even as a burglar on a dangerous quest, Bilbo recognizes that Gollum is pitiful rather than purely dangerous. Tolkien writes, "It was mercy that stayed his hand." This moment shows that Bilbo's instinct toward compassion is stronger than his fear or his advantage — he could have escaped more easily by striking, but he chooses the harder, more humane path. This matters because Tolkien is suggesting that true heroism isn't about power or survival — it's about what you choose when no one is watching.</p>

    <p>Same student. Same text. Different scaffold. The S — the <em>so what</em> — is what forces a student to move from reporting what happened to analyzing what it means. That is exactly what W.6–8.9 requires. And it's the step RACE skips entirely.</p>

    <h2>Why TREES™ Works for Every Learner in Your Room</h2>

    <p>Here's something I know from seven years in the middle school ELA classroom: struggling writers don't freeze because they're lazy or don't care. They freeze because they don't know what comes next.</p>
    <p>Every step of TREES™ answers the question <em>what do I write here?</em> — not just <em>what category does this belong in?</em> And because the scaffold is clear enough for your most struggling writers, it works better for every student in the room — gifted, struggling, neurodivergent, and neurotypical alike. Same high bar. Different way in.</p>

    <h2>How to Introduce TREES™ to Your Students</h2>

    <p>You don't need to overhaul your entire writing curriculum. Here's a simple four-week sequence:</p>

      <p>Introduce the acronym with a whole-class model. Pick a short, low-stakes text your students already know. Walk through each step out loud, narrating your thinking as you write. Show them a finished TREES™ response on the board.</p>

      <p class="week-title">Week 2 — Guided frame</p>
      <p>Give students a guided TREES™ graphic organizer with each section labeled and a sentence starter included. They fill it in before they write a single sentence of their response.</p>
    </div>
    <div class="week-block">
      <p class="week-title">Week 3 — Remove the starters</p>
      <p>Keep the frame but remove the sentence starters. Students fill in each section in their own words before writing.</p>
    </div>
    <div class="week-block">
      <p class="week-title">Week 4 and beyond — Independent use</p>
      <p>Students use the acronym independently. Many of mine still whispered "T-R-E-E-S" to themselves months into the school year. That's the scaffold doing its job.</p>
    </div>

    <h2>What About Students Who Already Know RACE?</h2>

    <p>Introducing TREES™ doesn't mean telling them RACE was wrong. It means telling them they're ready for more.</p>

    <p>That framing matters — especially for older students who feel like changing frameworks means they failed. They didn't fail. They outgrew it.</p>

    <h2>The Bottom Line</h2>

    <p>If your students are completing every step of RACE and still producing shallow, undeveloped responses — the problem isn't their effort. The problem is that RACE doesn't ask them to do the hardest thing in analytical writing: make meaning.</p>
    <p>TREES™ builds that in from the start. It doesn't lower the bar for struggling writers. It builds a staircase to get there. That's the difference between a strategy that manages writing and a framework that teaches it.</p>
